Program Overview: The one-day workshop will familiarize attendees with the fundamentals of catheter design while empowering them to ask better questions and make more informed design modifications. By helping engineers recognize gaps between a device’s intended use and how it is actually used in the clinical environment, the program fosters greater empathy for physicians and hospital systems and ultimately, better device designs.

 

Learning Objectives - After attending the workshop, attendees will:

  1. Recognize the critical value of clinical involvement early in the device development cycle

  2. Have an awareness and empathy for the realistic high-stakes clinical experience and decision‑making process, which will reframe how they think about potential failure modes and hazardous situations

  3. Have insights into how physicians manage complications and challenges and better understand why physicians decide not to follow an IFU verbatim and use devices off label

  4. Have learned to identify mismatches, anticipate potential misuse, and develop design modifications that better align devices with the realities of clinical practice.

  5. Understand the impact of systems such as procurement, reimbursement, and supply chain on device adoption.

  6. Gain familiarity with catheter design and an understanding of how each component decision fundamentally constrains or enables downstream performance tuning

  7. Have acquired a deeper understanding of the base materials that can be used to produce the majority of minimally invasive flexible devices


Hospital Credentialing: Stanford will require all attendees to complete a form to be approved to enter several locations visited during this workshop. Refunds will be issued if Stanford rejects your credential. However, refunds will not be issued if you fail to complete this process within the time allowed (3 days MIN).
